Dinner Review at Mssion Inn Resort by Judy Farrance
Posted on Feb 1st, 2015
This was one of the best food and wine pairing dinners we have ever attended at Mission Inn resort. This is quite a statement after having lived in Northern California for 20 years!  The food was absolutely fantastic and the wine pairings were fabulous. I strongly suggest anyone who has never gone to one of these dinners, splurge, and treat themselves to a taste extravaganza.  Napa cellars is one of the finest wineries set at a price point that makes sense to the real world. There are many other wineries in Napa Valley that are much more expensive but not necessarily worth the taste.

A Great Adventure to the Other Side of the World
Posted on Jan 23rd, 2015
Riki and Charles are pictured here on upper deck of Seabourn Odyssey. Just arrived in the picturesque and awesome Milford Sound in New Zealand where they have been cruising for over a week with excursions to volcanic thermal areas by bicycle, kayaking, walking, and sighting albatross and tiny penguins. A few very rough days on the Tasman Sea crossing into Australia didn't stop them from eating and drinking and enjoying concerts aboard. .... Journal Entry 94, Charles and Rikki Petersen

Howey Book Club 2014-2015: The Anatomy Lesson by Nina Siegal
Monday, February 2nd
For Time and Location Contact Cathy Wilkes

This is a rather intriguing bit of historical fiction and is the second book this year which focuses on a painting. This painting, entitled “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” was Rembrandt’s first internationally acclaimed masterpiece.  The novel opens in 1632 on the morning of the medical dissection and follows several characters as they prepare for the evening’s big event. This is the era of tulip mania, the rise of “corporate finance” and the blossoming of some of the finest artists of all time. Just to keep us on off balance, there is also a contemporary art historian who is examining the painting…

OPERA: Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta /
Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle—New Production
Saturday, February 14th, 12:30PM at Orlando Pointe Movie Theater
On the heels of her triumphant Met performances in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another Tchaikovsky heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill, consisting of an enchanting fairy tale (Iolanta) followed by an erotic psychological thriller (Duke Bluebeard’s Castle). Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta, while Nadja Michael is the unwitting victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko. Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic noir films of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas. Approximate running time 3:40

Riki Turofsky will host a pre-opera review.  Please contact Riki Turofsky for additional details as needed.

Howey Book Club 2014-2015: The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson
Monday, March 2nd
For Time and Location Contac Cathy Wilkes

This 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner is an epic dystopian novel set in North Korea, reminiscent of Orwell’s 1984 perhaps.  Part I is a biography of Pak Jun Do, an ‘Everyman’, who has many picaresque adventures despite living in the world’s most mysterious dictatorship. Do is the haunted son of a lost mother and an influential father who runs a work camp for orphans.  Recognized for his loyalty and keen instincts he comes to the attention of superiors in the state and rises in the ranks....

OPERA: Rossini’s La Donna del Lago—Met Premiere
Saturday, March 14th, 12:55PM at Orlando Pointe Movie Theater
Bel canto superstars Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez join forces for this Rossini showcase of vocal virtuosity, set in the medieval Scottish highlands and based on a beloved novel by Sir Walter Scott. DiDonato is the “lady of the lake” of the title, and Flórez is the king who relentlessly pursues her, their vocal fireworks embellishing the romantic plot in this Met premiere production conducted by Michele Mariotti. Approximate running time 3:30

Riki Turofsky will host a pre-opera review.  Please contact Riki Turofsky for additional details as needed.

Howey Book Club 2014-2015 A Fairy Tale by Jonas T. Bengtsson

The unsolved murder of former Swedish Prime Minister, Olaf Palme, shot while leaving a movie theatre in downtown Stockholm 28 years ago, remains an unhealed wound on the Scandinavian psyche.  How could such a good leader be so callously killed and how can the perpetrator(s) still be at large?....
